King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament

Bangkok riverside

The world's largest elephant polo tournament, raising funds for elephant welfare. Teams from around the world play in Bangkok with proper rules and refs. Ethical concerns exist — the event funds rescue programs.

Tips for foreigners

Tickets often free or low-cost. Sun protection essential. Read about the welfare practices of participating mahouts before attending.

Songkran Eve — Wat Pho Buddha Bathing

Wat Pho, Bangkok

On Songkran eve, devotees pour scented water over Buddha statues and elders' hands as a sign of respect and renewal. Quieter, more spiritual side of the holiday.

Tips for foreigners

Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees. Bring small change for offerings. This is not the water-fight Songkran — keep it respectful.

Songkran (Thai New Year)
🎊 Festival
April 12 – April 14, 2026

Songkran (Thai New Year)

Nationwide

Thailand's wildest holiday. Three days of nationwide water fights mark the lunar new year. Bangkok's Khao San Road, Chiang Mai's old city moat, and Pattaya are the biggest celebration zones.

Tips for foreigners

Bring a waterproof phone case. Wear a Hawaiian shirt or anything bright. Avoid driving — rent a tuk-tuk or walk. Be careful around elderly people who may not want water on them.

Phi Ta Khon (Ghost Festival)
🎭 Cultural
June 21 – June 23, 2026

Phi Ta Khon (Ghost Festival)

Dan Sai, Loei

Three-day Buddhist merit-making festival in Loei province. Locals don colorful spirit masks made from coconut tree trunks and parade through Dan Sai. Loud, joyful, and visually unforgettable.

Tips for foreigners

Book accommodation 2+ months ahead — Dan Sai is small. Bring earplugs (the parades are LOUD). Buy a mask from a local artisan as a souvenir.

Vegetarian Festival
🍲 Food
October 6 – October 14, 2026

Vegetarian Festival

Phuket; also Bangkok Chinatown

Nine days of strict vegetarian eating, processions, and (in Phuket) extreme body piercing rituals. Phuket's celebration is the most famous, dating to 1825 when a traveling Chinese opera troupe survived a malaria epidemic by going vegetarian.

Tips for foreigners

Look for yellow flags marking vegetarian (เจ jay) stalls. Some street processions involve self-mortification — viewer discretion advised. Try the imitation 'meat' dishes — they're remarkable.

Yi Peng Lantern Festival
🎊 Festival
November 3 – November 5, 2026

Yi Peng Lantern Festival

Chiang Mai

Northern Thailand's lantern festival, often coinciding with Loy Krathong. Thousands of paper lanterns released into the night sky in Chiang Mai. The mass release ceremony at Mae Jo is a bucket-list experience.

Tips for foreigners

Mass-release events sell out months ahead. The free Tha Phae Gate lantern lighting is more authentic and crowded. Lanterns can drift onto power lines — only release where designated.

Loy Krathong
🕯️ Tradition
Wed, November 4, 2026

Loy Krathong

Nationwide; biggest in Sukhothai and Chiang Mai

Float a krathong (small banana-leaf raft with candle and incense) on water to release misfortune. The Sukhothai festival is the original; Chiang Mai pairs it with the lantern festival Yi Peng for an unforgettable sky.

Tips for foreigners

Buy your krathong from a local stall, not a hotel. Use bread or banana leaf — never styrofoam (most cities have banned it). Don't release sky lanterns in Bangkok (illegal due to airport flight paths).

Wonderfruit Festival
🎊 Festival
December 10 – December 13, 2026

Wonderfruit Festival

The Fields at Siam Country Club, Pattaya

Thailand's premier music + arts + sustainability festival. Four days of international and Thai acts, food villages, art installations, and wellness, in a custom-built field outside Pattaya.

Tips for foreigners

Camp on-site or stay in Pattaya and shuttle. Cashless wristband payments. Bring earplugs for camping near the main stage.
